It had to happen.

A tragic start to the day, with reports of a New Zealand soldier being killed in Afghanistan on active service.

My thoughts go to the family and others in the forces. Kia Kaha.

Such tragedies are the price we pay to hopefully make the world a better place.

Now I await the disgusting tirade of political points scoring that will inevitably follow from Locke and Minto et al.

Agree wholeheartedly PM, and have blogged accordingly. It will be an outrage if the peaceniks try to make political capital out of this. I would expect there to be a notice of motion at the start of the sitting of the House this afternoon, ad I will be listening VERY carefully to whatever the Greens say.

Your photo appears to show an Australian flag, and it is also far too low of the staff.

No that is in fact a New Zealand ensign. The lack of a dirty big white star under the cnaton is the giveaway. easy mistake to make because the red is hard to see some times.

It is however far too low. "Half mast" is actually 3/4 of the masthead. Also a common mistake.

Not everyone has a bunting tosser for a father though.

Actually, half mast should be the depth of one flag. The origin, IIRC, was that the invisible flag of death was flying above the national flag.
