Yoof and the Warburton Effect

Lindsay Mitchell reports that Mr Key is about to announce something big tomorrow for our troubled yoof. And asks that he does a proper job.

Lindsay has been tirelessly and thanklessly banging on about our yoof being locked into the vicious welfare cycle. She references a British Columbia report on such matters which notes the Warburton Effect.

I concluded that the sort of change needed could only happen when there was a consensus that individuals are first and foremost responsible for themselves and their children.

We as parents try to do the best for our children and we know giving them welfare is a massive disincentive. I thank my now departed father-in-law for having those harsh words all those years along the lines of 'No, we are not giving you a handout or a loan'. That caused us a newly-weds to take a turn for the better. Hard yards, but a much better outcome.

When we try to help some people by providing them with financial support, we can unintentionally hurt others by inducing them to drop out of school.

Yes, Mr Key, please tomorrow as Lindsay asks, do a proper job and help turn around our troubled yoof. Yes, the usual suspects will scream "Won't someone please think of the children?" but New Zealand parents will thank you in the end.

The underlying premise is that the convicted criminal has rights is utterly wrong. The criminal is so named because of transgressions against what as a society we deem to be the norm. Having broken those rules, the criminal forfeits his rights.

Particularly rights to live within society at large. And to incur punishment for the crime.

Think about that if you will.

The criminal justice processes that the learned Dame refers to are not there to help criminals, but to exact retribution for criminal actions. And if there is an emotional and financial cost of keeping victims in that thrall, then so be it. That is the cost of crime in our society.

Bank cuts fees

Who would have thought. Times must be tough.

Just days ago we were being regaled with tales of a tax rort worth hundreds of millions. Now we are being told that one of the big five is breaking ranks to cut penalty fees. Fees that customers have long complained about, but as life has been so good, thoroughly ignored.

Banks must be really scratching for new customers or else in deep up the creek. God forbid, next bastard banks might actually give some service to use the customer's money!

Oh dear, where will it all end? Won't someone think of the shareholders? Next, I suppose they too will be all over Twitter and TradeMe looking for a handout from the taxpayer.
